News

Seattle Neighbor Appreciation Day is Sat, Feb. 11
In 1995, former PNA staff and Board member Judith Wood suggested that the City designate a special day to reach out and strengthen our bonds with each other and Mayor Norm Rice proclaimed Neighbor Appeciation Day.

What random acts of kindness could you do for your neighbors this year? Roll their trashcan out to the curb? Water their garden? Bake them cookies? Sweep their sidewalk? Buy an extra cup of coffee for the person next to you in line?

Pick up random act of kindness cards, available at the Phinney Center, and offer some niceties to your neighbors. More ideas at seattle.gov/neighborday.

Difficult Conversations Series: Mental Illness
Nearly 1 in 5 Americans are affected by mental health conditions every year, yet as a society we often do not understand or deal well with the impacts of these illnesses.

Join us on Thurs., Feb. 16, 6:30-8:30 pm, at the Phinney Center for a free viewing of Unlisted: A Story of Schizophrenia. Katie Mahoney, MSW, Program Coordinator for the National Association of Mental Illness will lead a discussion exploring mental illness, family, and personal and societal responsibility. RSVP at 206.297.0875 or arielb@phinneycenter.org.

A Mental Health Symposium on Wed., Feb. 22, 1:30 pm, at the Greenwood Senior Center brings representatives from National Alliance on Mental Illness, In Our Own Voice, Compass Housing, and a family caregiver and advocate. Discuss myths and facts about this health epidemic, issues surrounding resources and public policy, and how we can help.

Hip Hop Returns
Explore the history, music and culture of hip hop– DJs, MCs (rappers), B-Boys (breakdancers) and Graffiti Writers. During this five week, intergenerational course, embark on a deeper examination of the elements of this great American art form.
Monday evenings, 7-9 pm at the Phinney Center, starting Feb. 6.

Temporary Library Closure starts Feb 13
You may have heard through the grapevine that the Greenwood Branch will be closing for roughly 8 weeks starting February 13th for improvements. During that time, they will be hosting a variety of library programs for children and families throughout the neighborhood including story times at local café’s, events at local schools and the Phinney Center, and special events at local businesses.
