Volunteer OpportunitiesOne-On-One Computer Mentor Outlined below are a variety of ways you can become involved. For more information, contact Steve Gisel, CTC/Outreach Coordinator, at (206) 297-0875 or steve@greenwoodseniorcenter.org Mentors should have a basic knowledge of software applications, hardware, and the ability to communicate computer fundamentals in a straightforward manner. He or she must have a good sense of humor, patience, and value working with a variety of people. A good computer mentor does not need to be a "Computer Guru", but rather someone who enjoys helping others learn a new skill and who is comfortable doing most tasks on a computer. The majority of opportunities for computer mentoring are during the weekdays from 9:00am - 4:00pm. Mentors establish a schedule when they are available, then interested people sign up for one hour sessions. The dates and times of scheduled mentoring sessions are confirmed with mentors. This system allows mentors to establish their own schedules and avoids waiting around for students to show up, which can be a problem in many "drop-in" centers. Help is needed to make the CTC a more accessible center for all members of our community, including people who have disabilities. The CTC is seeking volunteers with disabilities who have personal knowledge of adaptive technologies or volunteers with experience and/or knowledge regarding adaptive technologies. Volunteers who would be able to offer help to people with a variety of disabilities are sought in order for the CTC to be able to offer "open labs" or a "One-on-One Computer Mentoring" program specifically for people with disabilities. Instructor - Position Description Individuals needed to provide either general or specialized computer training to individuals, families, and senior citizens. Functions include preparing lessons and materials necessary for instruction, teaching classes to CTC users as scheduled, staying current with the latest software applications, facilitating evaluation, and assisting in curriculum assessment. Volunteers must possess oral and written communication skills, the willingness to research and prepare lesson plans, and the ability to facilitate the learning process. S/he must be dependable, patient, and genuinely interested in helping people.
