Patient No More! How Being a Participant in Your Own Care and Using a Health Advocate Can Save Your Life
Wednesday, February 8, 2017 10:00 – 11:30 AM
Phinney Center Blue Building, Room 6. FREE.

Join Robin Shapiro, from WASHAA (the Washington State Health Advocacy Association), for a free session to learn more about how to improve your health care experience with skills and insights into becoming more active in your own health.  Everyone has the ability to seek better choice and control in health care decision-making.  This session will review some of the most important ways people can become full Participants by applying common health advocacy skills. Be ready for an interactive, hands-on session, with must-know tips for anyone who has ever assisted family, friends or themselves in navigating the health care system.  This program is sponsored by the PNA Village but open to everyone!  For more information or to register, contact the Village at village@phinneycenter.org or 206-789-1217.

PNA Volunteer Health Advocate Training
Saturday, February 11, 9:00 AM - Noon
Greenwood Senior Center

Volunteers – consider being a health advocate! People who visit the doctor forget 80% of what the doctor says the minute they leave the doctor’s office.  Having a trained volunteer health advocate can help ease the burden of preparing for a doctor visit, taking notes, understanding what the doctor is saying and keeping track of the medical record.  In partnership with the Washington State Health Advocacy Association (WASHAA.org), the Village is offering a free training to volunteers who wish to become volunteer health advocates.  This training is geared toward non-medical volunteers who want to make a difference by supporting Village members with specific health advocacy tasks such as:  creating a list of questions for the doctor and attending and taking notes at a doctor visit.  This session will not only prepare you for your volunteer role, but will also be helpful when you assist family and friends (or yourself) in navigating the medical system.  Be ready for a dynamic learning experience as you participate in health advocacy scenarios and learn the role of a health advocate.  You will also receive a notebook that includes the curriculum and health advocacy tools.  For more information or to register, contact the Village at village@phinneycenter.org or 206-789-1217.

Celebrating 15 Years of the Village Movement with Dr. Atul Gawande
Monday February 13, 1:30 – 4 PM
Phinney Center, Brick Building, Community Hall
On February 13th, Beacon Hill Village and villages around the globe will celebrate 15 years of changing the experience of aging. Dr. Atul Gawande, whose celebrated 2014 book Being Mortal continues to sustain a lively national conversation about living well and ending well in older age, will be the keynote speaker at a public forum. His conversation, entitled “Being Mortal’s Villages: The Value of Community and Choice as we Grow Older,” will be moderated by Robin Young, host of NPR’s Here & Now, and feature a discussion on aging, living life with purpose, and how we can transform the possibilities for the later chapters in everyone’s lives. The live event will begin at 2pm PST and be simulcast from Boston to more than 150 of the 350-plus villages open and in development across the country, including the PNA Village.

All are welcome to join the PNA Village for a viewing party and subsequent conversation facilitated by Cecile Andrews, author of Living Room Revolution: A Handbook for Conversation, Community, and the Common Good. Please bring a snack or dessert to share and RSVP at 206-789-1217 or village@phinneycenter.org
